From Jakarta to Tokyo: Carving a career in tech marketing
International Women’s Day on March 8 honors the achievements of women around the world and promotes gender equality. At TIER IV, women across the company contribute to our mission of making autonomous driving accessible to all, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
To mark the occasion this year, we’re introducing employees whose backgrounds reflect the diversity and values of our organization. In this first installment, Alisha shares her journey from Jakarta to Tokyo and the experiences shaping her work in TIER IV’s Marketing Communications Department.
I was born and raised in Indonesia and moved to Japan for my undergraduate studies. When I first moved to Tokyo, I spoke zero Japanese. However, I was interested in learning and viewed the challenges I faced as opportunities for growth. At university, I studied liberal arts with a focus on international business and economics. I also took Japanese lessons, which laid the foundation for my language skills today.
It was during my undergraduate studies that I developed an interest in marketing. I initially wanted a marketing role in the fashion industry or at a creative agency in Jakarta. After landing an internship at a tech consulting firm in Tokyo, I was drawn to the excitement and potential of the tech industry. I realized that there is space for me, too, as a woman without a traditional technical background.
Looking back, my journey into the tech industry was neither predictable nor linear. One thing I am grateful for is that I didn’t limit myself to one box. Just because my academic background was in one field, it doesn’t mean that the skills I gained weren’t transferable to another. That openness led me to where I am today.
At TIER IV, I work in the Marketing Communications Department, where I primarily handle digital marketing and event-related activities. Most recently, I have been involved in the planning and production of promotional materials, and every day brings new learning experiences.
As an early-career marketer, being entrusted with projects of different scales can feel daunting, but I feel less apprehensive thanks to the company’s relaxed atmosphere. Being able to work with members from diverse backgrounds and utilize my language skills has been a rewarding experience.
When it comes to work, I strive to be a listener and to stay curious. When you’re actively listening to someone, you soak up information like a sponge, while also being mindful of what you’re absorbing. Life and work feel more meaningful when you're curious about different perspectives and constantly learning from others. I hope this curiosity stays with me and continues to open new doors in my journey.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading books, learning Japanese, getting coffee with my loved ones and working out. Making sure I’m physically active and staying connected with my support system helps me stay grounded when work gets busy.
Growing up in a tight-knit district in Jakarta, I knew I wanted to try living in a different environment to better understand other cultures and ways of life, and I ultimately chose Japan. I’m grateful to my family, especially my mom, who was very supportive of my decision to move abroad alone at a young age. If it weren’t for her support, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
